GET TO KNOW CHEROKEE COUNTY NC
From: Guide to the Murphy Area - a publication of the Cherokee Scout.
A 30-minute road trip can take you to lakes, streams, whitewater rafting, fishing, camping and hiking.
From forests and rivers frequented by the native Cherokee Indians to today's modern, yet still ruralcommunity, Cherokee County has a varied and interesting history.
CHEROKEE COUNTY was formed in 1839 from a portion of Macon County. Located in the Valley River Valley, the scenes and panoramas are breathtaking as mountains undulate and tumble into each other along the horizon.
However, those who visit find that majestic morning mists over the mountaintops are only the beginning of days filled with fun surprises.
MURPHY, where the Hiwassee and Valley rivers merge, is the County seat.
Cherokee County has been home to a variety of industries. Throughout most of the 19th and early 20th centuries, argriculture was the county's main industry. In 1879, there were 964 farms in the county. In 1945, there were 2,007.
Farming and other industries received a boost in the late 1880s, when the railroad made its way to Murphy. During the first haft of the 20th century, lumber companies, marble quarries, talc mines, tanneries, textile mills and other factories supported the economy.
While many of those industries have left, the local economy today is supported by construction, real estate, tourism and related industries, which provide diversity to local life.
The Cherokee County COURTHOUSEis the only Blue Marble constructure of its kind in the world.
After fire destroyed four wooden courthouses from 1875 to 1925, county officials wanted to build one that would not burn and decided to use locally quarried blue marble. The Courthouse is on Peachtree Street in Downtown Murphy.
Life in the entire area took a dramatic turn in the 1940s, when the Tennessee Valley Authority's HIWASSEE DAMbrought electricity to Cherokee County.
Touted as being TWO HOURS from anywhere - but not necessarily that far - Cherokee County has diversions of very kind near at hand. Within a roughly two-hour driving distance are attractions in ATLANTA; ASHEVILLE; ETHENS-GA; CHATTANOOGA-TENNESEE, CHEROKEE INDIAN RESERVATION; GATLINBURG-TENN.; GREENVILL-SC.; KNOXVILLE-TENN.; and PIGEON FORGE-TENN.
Murphy and Andrews are the only incorporated towns in the County. Other unique communities include BRASSTOWN, CULBERSON, GRAPE CREEK, HANGING DOG, HIWASSEE DAM, MARBLE, OGREETA, PEACHTREE, RANGER, TOPTON AND UNAKA. Many provide sidewalks to stroll, shops to visit, restaurants to dine in, bookstores, antiques, ice cream, flea markets, crafts and movies.

Rockslide cleared on U.S. 64
Businesses cheer as Ocoee Gorge reopens to traffic
By DWIGHT OTWELL
dotwell@cherokeescout.comTuesday, April 20, 2010 8:05 PM CDT
Ocoee, Tenn. – Area businesses, especially along U.S. 64 West, are ready to see cash flowing to their establishments after the Ocoee Gorge reopened on April 14.
Those who have had to travel an extra two to three hours round trip to get around the rockslide on U.S. 64 are sighing with relief after what they call a long five months. The highway closed on Nov. 10 after a massive rockslide closed the road connecting Cleveland and Chattanooga, Tenn., to Cherokee County.
Linda Payne, owner of Payne’s Tire and Grocery on U.S. 64 West, said she is excited the road has reopened. “I just saw 26 motorcycles going through here,” she said. “I haven’t heard that sound in the last five months. We have suffered. This has been a long five months.
“We are already getting tractor-trailer trucks coming through.”
Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce Director Phylis Blackmon said she is excited the doors have been opened so tourists from that direction can come in and the county receive the full flow of tourism dollars.
The road opening also will benefit the health-care community as medical units can get through each way, she said.
Larry Kernea, manager for Murphy Power Board, has been forced to detour around the gorge as he often travels to Chattanooga for meetings with the Tennessee Valley Authority. Alternate routes added more than an hour to the trip.
“I can’t imagine the expense that situation has had on our businesses and the added cost of hauling merchandise, through fuel and time,” he said.
When coupled with road closings caused by rockslides on Interstate 40 near Waynesville and U.S. 129 near Robbinsville, it has been a “perfect storm on our mountain roads,” he said.
David Hughes, manager for King’s Leathercraft, said the store has moved to Murphy, next to McDonald’s but the old store on U.S. 64 West will still be open for awhile as they hold a 50 percent off sale. Part of the reason for the move was because the road closed.
“We felt like we needed to be closer to town,” he said.
King’s owns the business they are moving from but rents the facility in Murphy. They will either sell or lease the building further out U.S. 64 West.
Sherry Hicke, assistant director of the Ocoee Whitewater Center, said Thursday there was little activity at the center while the road was closed. The road was shut down just past the whitewater center.
“The road is covered up with traffic today,” she said. “Rafting begins [April 17].”
Rafting was scheduled to begin March 13 but delayed for a month. A celebration of the road reopening was held at the whitewater center Friday.
The highway reopened just after 11 a.m. April 14, two days before the announced opening. The project, which included the cleanup of a Jan. 19 rockslide a few miles from the original slide, cost more than $2.8 million , according to Jennifer Flynn with Tennessee Department of Transportation.
Contractors worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week the last month to clear debris, Flynn said.
TDOT said 26,000 tons of debris were removed from the Nov. 10 rockslide and 14,000 tons from the Jan. 19 rockslide.
Roger Stewart, assistant regional maintenance manager with the TDOT, said slides occur on U.S. 64 through the gorge frequently. The road was constructed in the early 1900s, and time and exposure to weather have taken a toll on the rock cliffs.
Kernea said the rockslide brings to the forefront the fact that transportation is critical. He hopes planning for the completion of Corridor K will move forward.
